I froze halfway down the stairs.
The kitchen was almost completely dark, except for the pale circle of light beneath the range hood. At first, I thought the movement was caused by a shadow outside the window. Then I heard a faint scratching sound.
I switched on the kitchen lights.
Nothing.
The hood light was still glowing normally.
I walked closer and inspected the stove, the cabinets, and the wall behind the hood. There was no smoke. No sparks. No burning smell. I reached toward the switch and turned the hood light off.
Click.
Darkness.
Then, from inside the cabinet above the hood, I heard the scratching again.
I stepped back.
My first thought was that an animal had somehow gotten into the wall. We lived in an older house, and mice were not unusual. I grabbed a flashlight and opened the cabinet.
Nothing jumped out.
But there were tiny black marks around the electrical wiring.
My stomach tightened.
I called my husband.
He came downstairs, still half asleep, and examined the cabinet. He immediately stopped joking.
“Don’t touch anything,” he said.
We switched off the kitchen circuit at the breaker and called an electrician in the morning.
The electrician arrived before noon. He removed the hood cover and examined the wiring.
After several minutes, he looked at us.
“You were lucky.”
I felt my heart sink.
“What happened?”
He pointed toward the lighting assembly.
“The bulb isn’t the problem. The wiring behind it has been getting extremely hot.”
He showed us a section of insulation that had begun to discolor.
“The previous bulb was drawing more heat than this fixture was designed to handle,” he explained. “Someone replaced the original bulb with a higher-wattage one.”
My husband looked at me.
“I didn’t do it.”
Neither had I.
Then I remembered.
Three weeks earlier, my brother-in-law had visited to help us repair a cabinet. He had complained that the range hood light was too dim.
“He said he replaced the bulb,” I whispered.
The electrician nodded.
“That explains it.”
The strange movement I had seen wasn’t an animal at all. A loose piece of heat-damaged insulation had been shifting whenever the ventilation fan or nearby airflow moved through the hood.
But the electrician wasn’t finished.
He removed the damaged wiring and discovered something worse.
The insulation around another wire had begun to melt.
“If you had kept using the light like this,” he said, “eventually you could have had an electrical fire.”
I stared at the small fixture above our stove.
Something so ordinary had almost become the cause of a disaster.
We replaced the damaged wiring, installed the correct manufacturer-approved LED module, cleaned the hood thoroughly, and tested every switch.
That night, I stood in the kitchen before going upstairs.
The hood light was off.
For the first time, I understood that the danger had never been the fact that the light had stayed on overnight.
The danger had been the hidden fault behind it.
After that, I changed one habit permanently.
I stopped assuming that something was safe simply because it still worked.
A flickering bulb, a burning smell, unusual heat, discoloration, damaged wiring, or repeated bulb failures might seem like small inconveniences, but they can be warnings.
And I learned another lesson too.
If a light is going to be left on for hours, the correct bulb matters.
A fixture designed for a cool LED should never be forced to handle a hotter, higher-wattage bulb simply because someone wants more brightness.
The next morning, I bought a small LED night-light for the kitchen.
The range hood stayed off unless I actually needed it.
Sometimes safety doesn’t require dramatic changes.
Sometimes it means paying attention to the little things before they become big ones.
