I had spent days caring for my mother while she recovered in our home. Her speech had become slurred, her hands sometimes trembled, and even eating soup could be exhausting. I stayed beside her, helped her eat, and made sure she never felt ashamed of needing help. My husband, however, treated her illness very differently. He mocked the way she ate and once called her soup “baby food,” laughing while she struggled to swallow. I tried to ignore it, hoping his behavior was simply thoughtless.
Then his own mother came to visit, and everything changed. Suddenly, he became the most attentive son I had ever seen. He drove forty minutes to buy her favorite scones, made sure she was comfortable, and expected the entire house to revolve around her. When he told me to stay quietly in the kitchen and wash dishes so his mother would not be disturbed, something inside me finally broke. I packed a suitcase and confronted him—and his reaction revealed exactly what I had been refusing to admit.
