A heart attack can strike suddenly, often without warning, and every second counts. Many people panic or don’t know what to do when symptoms begin — but staying calm and acting quickly can mean the difference between life and death. Here are three vital techniques that could save your life while waiting for medical help to arrive.
1️⃣ Call Emergency Services Immediately
The first and most important step is to call emergency services (such as 911 or your local emergency number). Do not attempt to drive yourself to the hospital — paramedics can begin life-saving treatment on the way and ensure you reach the right facility as quickly as possible. Keep your phone nearby and make sure your emergency contacts are easy to access.
2️⃣ Stay Calm and Sit or Lie Down
Avoid any physical effort, as exertion can worsen heart damage. Sit or lie down in a comfortable position to reduce strain on your heart. Try to stay calm by taking slow, steady breaths. Remember, panic increases your heart rate and blood pressure, which can make the situation more dangerous.
3️⃣ Chew (Don’t Swallow Whole) an Aspirin
If available — and if you’re not allergic — chew one standard aspirin tablet (usually 325 mg). Chewing allows the medication to enter your bloodstream faster, helping reduce clotting and improve blood flow to the heart. Only do this if you are conscious and able to swallow safely.
⚠️ Important Note: Ignore online myths about “cough CPR.” Forcing yourself to cough will not restart your heart and can be dangerous without professional guidance.
Recognizing the Warning Signs: Chest pain or pressure lasting more than a few minutes, pain spreading to the arm, neck, or jaw, shortness of breath, nausea, or cold sweats. If these occur, act fast — early action saves lives.
