Johnny’s eyes moved from Mr. Johnson to Mary. “Who told you?” he demanded. Before the teacher could answer, the classroom door opened. Daniel, Johnny’s closest friend, stepped inside. His expression was uncomfortable, and he refused to meet Johnny’s eyes. “I’m sorry,” Daniel whispered. “I didn’t want to get involved, but I saw everything.”
Johnny felt betrayed. Daniel explained that Johnny had asked him to distract the teacher during the examination so he could copy Mary’s answers. Daniel had refused, but he had witnessed Johnny moving his chair closer. Suddenly, Johnny realized his clever excuses were no longer protecting him. Yet Daniel had one more thing to reveal.
