Trevor’s lawyer, Mr. Collins, introduced himself and asked whether Eli was home. When I told him my son was visiting his grandmother, he carefully placed the documents on the kitchen table. He explained that Trevor had recently instructed him to prepare legal paperwork concerning Eli’s guardianship. I felt confused because I had never agreed to anything like that.
Then he showed me a message Trevor had sent to someone named Vanessa. It read, “The boy must stay behind. Once we’re in San Diego, everything will be easier.” My stomach tightened. I recognized Vanessa’s name immediately. She was Trevor’s former wife, the woman he had claimed was no longer part of his life.
