The man’s name was Michael, and the little boy beside him was his eight-year-old son, Joshua. Michael looked exhausted, with dark circles beneath his eyes, but his expression was filled with gratitude. He explained that the police had contacted him after receiving the wallet. When he learned someone had returned every dollar, he asked whether there was a way to thank the people responsible. After obtaining our permission through the department, he’d arranged to visit us.
Michael told us that Joshua had a medical condition affecting his mobility and required specialized equipment and ongoing therapy. The money in the wallet represented months of savings, extra shifts, and sacrifices their family had made to afford those expenses. He’d been carrying it while arranging payment for an important piece of equipment when the wallet slipped from his pocket. By the time he noticed, it was gone.
He described searching the sidewalk, calling nearby businesses, and retracing his steps repeatedly. He’d gone home believing the money was lost forever. Joshua had noticed his father’s distress and asked what was wrong. Michael explained that they’d encountered a problem but promised to keep looking for a solution. The following day, the police called with news that someone had returned the wallet untouched.
Joshua reached toward us, holding a folded sheet of paper. He explained that his mother always told him good people were like superheroes because they helped others even when nobody was watching. He’d wanted to draw a picture for the people who helped his family. Darren knelt beside the wheelchair and accepted the drawing carefully. I watched his expression change as Joshua smiled. The anger that had filled our home for days seemed to disappear in a single moment.
