Lila ran toward Carter first, wrapping her little arms around his neck. The twins followed, while Eli approached more slowly, finally allowing himself to cry. Carter hugged them and promised to keep doing everything possible to protect their home. Their journey was only beginning, but they would face it together.
As they drove away, Eli asked whether they were really staying together. Carter smiled through tears and answered yes. He could never recover the siblings lost during his childhood, but he could offer these five children something different. Twenty years later, he had finally fulfilled the promise he once made himself.
