The courtroom was quieter than I expected. Gary sat beside his attorney, avoiding my eyes. Margaret presented the signed ticket, purchase records, witness statement, bank transfers, and the letter addressed to Brenda. Gary’s attorney argued that the jackpot was marital property because the ticket had been purchased during our marriage. Margaret acknowledged that the law required a complete financial review, but emphasized Gary’s undisclosed transfers and attempted sole claim. After hearing both sides, the judge ordered the disputed winnings to remain protected until the divorce settlement was finalized.
Then Gary made a mistake. Under questioning, he admitted he had known about the winning numbers before filing for divorce. He also acknowledged that he had taken the ticket without asking me. The judge ordered additional financial disclosures and instructed both parties to negotiate a settlement. Outside the courtroom, Gary finally approached me. “I never thought you would fight this hard,” he said. I answered quietly, “You never thought I would discover the truth.” For the first time, he looked genuinely afraid of what his choices had cost him.
