Margaret requested our banking statements covering the previous eighteen months. What we discovered was shocking. Gary had transferred thousands of dollars from our joint account into a private account without telling me. The transfers had started months before the winning numbers were announced. He had repeatedly told me we couldn’t afford renovations, vacations, or even simple luxuries. Meanwhile, he was quietly building a financial escape plan. Margaret placed the statements beside my old lottery tickets. “Patricia, this wasn’t a sudden decision,” she whispered.
I returned home and began searching through Gary’s remaining belongings. Inside a locked drawer, beneath several insurance documents, I discovered an envelope bearing his handwriting. It contained an unfinished letter addressed to someone named Brenda. My hands trembled as I unfolded it. Gary described an apartment, a new beginning, and his intention to leave our marriage once everything was arranged. But one sentence made my stomach turn. He had written that he only needed to wait until our financial situation became favorable. I called Margaret immediately.
