I returned to the drawing and concentrated on the spaces between the branches. Instead of asking what each object represented, I looked at the outlines created when different shapes overlapped. Slowly, the confusing details began forming patterns. I could understand why people might stare directly at the answer without recognizing it.
One friend suggested narrowing my eyes slightly to reduce the distracting details. I tried it, and the picture suddenly looked different. The branches appeared less like separate lines and more like parts of a larger shape. I was getting closer, but I still needed one final clue.
