The officer explained that the driver would not be allowed to continue driving that night. His condition had raised enough concerns to require further assessment. The driver protested, saying he lived only a short distance away and could easily manage the journey. The officer calmly explained that distance didn’t make impaired driving safe. The man looked toward his car, then back at the officer. “But I passed your final test!” he insisted. The officer shook his head. “You answered my question, sir. That isn’t the same thing as demonstrating that you’re safe to drive.”
Eventually, the driver realized that his clever response hadn’t changed the situation. He became quieter as the officer explained the appropriate procedures and arranged for him to get home safely without driving. His vehicle would remain parked until it could be collected appropriately. The driver sighed and admitted that perhaps he should have called someone earlier. The officer reminded him that making a better decision before getting behind the wheel could have prevented the entire situation. For once, the driver had no excuse. He simply nodded, looking embarrassed by the events of the evening.
