I didn’t answer immediately. Instead, I asked the doctor to explain everything again and requested copies of the previous records. Emily needed further examinations, and the medical team wanted to determine exactly what was causing her symptoms. I agreed to every recommended step. Meanwhile, my husband called repeatedly. Eventually, I answered. “Why are you making such a big deal out of this?” he demanded. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. “You knew she needed additional tests, Mark. Why didn’t you tell me?” There was silence. Then he quietly replied, “I was trying to protect our family.”
“Protect us from what?” I asked. He began talking about our finances, his fear of medical expenses, and the possibility that something serious might be wrong. He admitted that he had been terrified when the first report arrived. Instead of telling me, he convinced himself that Emily would improve. But then he said something that frightened me even more. He claimed the first doctor had told him there was probably nothing to worry about. The medical report in front of me clearly said otherwise. I ended the call and looked at Emily. She whispered, “Mom, there’s something else I haven’t told you.”
