I stared at the document, unable to understand why my husband had signed something so important without telling me. The doctor explained that our daughter, Emily, had previously been referred for urgent specialist evaluation because of persistent abdominal pain and abnormal findings. The report recommended further investigation. But the follow-up appointment had never happened. My hands began trembling. “Are you telling me my husband knew she needed more tests?” I asked. The doctor carefully explained that the records indicated he had received the information and acknowledged the recommendation. I felt the room spinning around me.
Emily sat quietly beside me, staring at the floor. I reached for her hand and asked whether she remembered that hospital visit. She nodded. “Dad said the doctor was exaggerating,” she whispered. “He told me not to worry you because you already had too much to deal with.” My heart broke. I asked why she hadn’t told me sooner. She started crying. “He said you would be angry with me for wasting money.” I hugged her tightly. Then my phone vibrated. My husband’s name appeared on the screen, followed by a message: “What exactly did the doctor tell you?”
