I asked my sister who had decided we shouldn’t attend. After several uncomfortable seconds, she finally mentioned our cousin Daniel. Apparently, he had complained that my daughter and I would make the gathering awkward because of an old family disagreement. I was stunned. Daniel and I hadn’t spoken about anything serious in months, and my daughter had barely interacted with him.
My sister insisted she was only trying to keep everyone happy. But when I asked why she hadn’t warned me before our journey, she became defensive. Then my phone vibrated. It was a message from another relative who had just noticed us standing outside. The message contained a photograph of the guest list, and one detail immediately caught my attention.
