My sister glanced toward the living room before lowering her voice. She explained that the gathering was intended for people who were genuinely close to the family. According to her, someone had suggested that inviting us might create unnecessary tension. I couldn’t understand what she meant. I had never argued with anyone, and my daughter had done absolutely nothing wrong.
I asked whether she was seriously expecting us to drive seven hours just to be turned away. She avoided answering. Behind her, I recognized our relatives laughing around the dining table. Then I noticed something that made the situation even worse: the expensive decorations and catered food had been purchased using money I had transferred to her weeks earlier. Suddenly, I realized this wasn’t simply a misunderstanding.
