One Saturday, I returned home earlier than usual because my parents had invited relatives for dinner. Grant and Ellie were there, looking comfortable in the house. Mother immediately reminded me that I should stay upstairs because some guests might ask uncomfortable questions about my recent hospitalization.
For the first time, I refused. I told her I was tired of being treated like a family embarrassment. Grant laughed nervously, but Dad became serious. “We’re trying to keep things peaceful,” he explained. I answered that peace shouldn’t require one family member to disappear. Then Hattie called, and her next words changed my plans completely.
