I immediately asked my husband why he was home when he was supposed to be at work. He didn’t appear nervous or surprised by the question. Instead, he calmly defended the babysitter and insisted that nothing inappropriate had happened. He repeated that the milk spill had forced her to change clothes and that she had simply taken a quick shower while the children were asleep. His explanation sounded reasonable, but I couldn’t understand why he hadn’t mentioned being home.
The babysitter also seemed eager to explain herself. She hadn’t done anything that obviously suggested wrongdoing, and the children were safe and comfortable. Still, the entire encounter left me feeling uneasy. I tried to convince myself that I was overreacting, but the questions kept returning. Had my husband come home specifically to see the babysitter? Was there something happening behind my back? Or was there an innocent explanation I simply hadn’t considered? That night, even after everyone had settled down, I couldn’t stop replaying the moment in my mind.
