When I returned home from work that evening, I expected to find my children watching cartoons with their babysitter, just as they usually did. Instead, I walked into a scene that immediately caught me off guard. The babysitter was coming out of the bathroom, her hair wrapped in a towel and her clothes apparently changed. I stopped in the hallway, confused, wondering why she had been using our bathroom while I was away. She quickly explained that my youngest child had spilled milk all over her clothes while the children were asleep. She said she had needed to change and take a quick shower.
Before I could properly process her explanation, my husband appeared from the kitchen. That surprised me even more because he was supposedly working the night shift. I looked at him, then at the babysitter, trying to understand why he was home. He seemed completely relaxed, as though nothing unusual had happened. But I couldn’t shake the feeling that something about the situation wasn’t right. Why was my husband home, and why hadn’t he told me?
