That afternoon, I received a call from Brad. He was furious that I had allowed other veterans to hunt the property without paying him. He accused me of embarrassing him in front of his friends. I calmly explained that the land had never belonged to him and that I had already taken steps to protect it. I also told him that Kurt, Mike, and Russ knew about the forged agreement. He threatened to take legal action, but my attorney was prepared with the deed, divorce judgment, and evidence. Eventually, he stopped calling.
At sunset, Dale, Tim, and Wes returned to the farmhouse. They hadn’t come to boast about hunting or discuss money. They simply wanted to thank me. Dale handed me a small photograph of his father standing beside my grandfather on that same ridge in 1974. I placed it inside Grandpa’s green notebook beside the old hunting entries. For the first time since Grandpa died, the farmhouse felt full of life again. I understood why he had never charged those men. Some things are worth more than money. And some debts can never be repaid with cash. These men already paid.
