A week before the wedding, Ray finally called me. His voice sounded unusually friendly. He said he was proud of the man I had become and hoped we could put the past behind us. I asked whether he remembered the afternoon he left me on that dirt road. His voice immediately changed. He claimed I had been disrespectful and that he thought a difficult experience would teach me responsibility. I asked about the trust payments and the lake property. He became angry, accusing Diane of filling my head with lies. I told him the documents spoke for themselves.
Then I explained that Megan knew the truth. Ray went completely silent. He eventually admitted that he had made mistakes but insisted he had done what he thought was best. I told him abandoning a thirteen-year-old child was not a lesson in toughness. It was abandonment. He demanded that I stay away from the wedding, but Megan had already made her decision. She wanted me there. Before ending the call, I told him I wasn’t coming to fight. I was coming to support my sister, and I would no longer hide the truth for his comfort.
