Diane explained that my grandparents had arranged monthly trust payments of $725 for my upbringing. Ray had received those payments after Mother’s death, supposedly to cover my food, clothing, education, and other expenses. But when I moved in with Diane at thirteen, the payments should have stopped. Instead, several additional payments had been issued after the custody transfer. Diane had raised me using her own income while my father continued receiving money intended for my care. I felt physically sick. The man who had abandoned me might also have profited from pretending to be my guardian.
I asked Diane whether she had confronted him. She explained that she had contacted the trust administrator years earlier but never received a complete accounting. Some records were missing, and she had decided to focus on raising me rather than fighting a lengthy legal battle. Now that I was an adult, she encouraged me to request the records myself. I contacted the trust department and asked for every available statement. Two days later, a thick envelope arrived. The first page showed payments I had never known existed, but the final statement revealed something even more disturbing.
