The legal proceedings took several months. During that time, the bank completed its investigation and confirmed that Richard’s loan application contained information that had not been properly disclosed to me. The application was withdrawn, and the disputed financial arrangements became part of the divorce proceedings. Vanessa eventually stopped communicating with Richard after discovering that he had made similar promises about money and property that he couldn’t guarantee. She sent me one final message apologizing for her part in the situation. I didn’t blame her for every decision he had made, but I knew I could never trust either of them again.
At the settlement meeting, Richard finally admitted that he had planned to sell the house and use part of the proceeds to finance his new life. Margaret presented our financial records and the evidence we had collected. The final agreement protected my share of the marital assets and gave me the option of remaining in the home. Richard moved out. When he handed over his keys, he looked at me and said, “I never thought you would fight me.” I answered quietly, “You never thought I would find out.” Then I closed the door.
