Richard insisted that Vanessa was simply a friend who had helped him organize his business finances. I reminded him that I had personally heard him discussing our house and their future together. He eventually admitted the affair but claimed he had never intended to leave me without anything. According to him, he had been planning to sell the house, settle our debts, and start over with Vanessa. He said he believed I would eventually understand. I asked why he had needed to lie about the paperwork. He had no answer.
Later that week, Vanessa contacted me. She sounded frightened and asked whether we could meet. I agreed to a public café. She brought a folder containing messages and financial correspondence Richard had shared with her. Some messages suggested he had described the house as an asset he could sell once the loan was approved. Others showed that he had promised her a comfortable future using money she believed was already available. She looked ashamed as she handed me the folder. “I thought he was building a life with me,” she whispered. I replied, “He was building it with my money.”
