One afternoon, Garland Whitaker unexpectedly visited my workshop. He walked around the wedding arch, carefully examining its handmade blossoms and impressive steelwork. When he noticed my invoice, he stopped at the words “No charge for Sid.” He asked why I had chosen dogwood flowers. I explained that our father had planted a dogwood tree when Sydney was born and photographed her beneath it every April. I wanted those flowers to remind her of him on her wedding day. Garland became unusually quiet when I mentioned my father’s name: Danny Mercer.
Then he revealed something I never expected. Thirty-six years earlier, my father had repaired Garland’s broken trailer when his construction business was struggling. Dad charged him only for materials and wrote, “No charge. Pay it forward.” Garland explained that my father’s kindness had helped him through a difficult time. He had never forgotten that debt. Now, looking at my invoice, he realized Danny’s son had unknowingly continued the same tradition.
