Mom explained that the money wasn’t the only thing Dad had saved. The work boots were purchased after he noticed my old shoes splitting at the seams. He had also kept my childhood drawings, school certificates, birthday cards, and photographs. Every envelope contained a little note describing something he remembered about that particular month. I realized that while I believed Dad never noticed my struggles, he had been watching quietly all along. But there was one more secret. Mom showed me a bank document revealing that Dad had arranged for the savings to become a house deposit in my name.
βHe wanted you to have somewhere safe to begin,β she whispered.
