10 Things You Should Never Leave on Your Kitchen Countertop If You Want a Cleaner, More Organized Home 3

Cutting boards were another item I had left leaning against the backsplash. Although keeping one nearby can be convenient, storing several boards on the counter creates clutter and can leave moisture trapped underneath them. I began washing them thoroughly, allowing them to dry completely, and storing them vertically in a suitable cabinet organizer. This kept them accessible without sacrificing valuable preparation space.

Pet food bowls also deserved more attention. When placed beside food preparation areas, they can introduce crumbs, spilled water, and other mess into an already busy space. I moved my pet’s feeding station to a designated area away from where we prepare meals. Keeping pet bowls clean and separating them from food-preparation surfaces helps maintain better kitchen hygiene.

Cookbooks were another item I reconsidered. I loved keeping my favorite recipes nearby, but splashes, grease, and steam could damage the pages. Instead of leaving several books permanently on the counter, I stored most of them on a nearby shelf and kept only the recipe I needed during cooking. A tablet or phone stand can also be useful, provided electronic devices are kept away from water, heat, and food spills.

The ninth item was fruit that didn’t need to be displayed constantly. Some fruits, including bananas, can be kept on the counter until ripe, while others benefit from refrigeration once ripe or after cutting. The best storage method depends on the type of fruit and its stage of ripeness. I stopped treating every fruit the same way and began storing each one according to its needs.

Finally, I removed unnecessary decorative containers and miscellaneous objects that had no regular purpose in the kitchen. Empty jars, unused utensils, and decorative pieces may look attractive, but too many of them leave less room for actual cooking. I kept only the items I used regularly and moved the rest elsewhere.

After making these changes, my kitchen felt more spacious, cleaning became easier, and food storage became more intentional. I learned that the goal isn’t to keep every countertop completely empty. It’s to make the space work for the people who use it. By storing the right things in the right places, you can create a kitchen that feels calmer, stays cleaner, and makes everyday cooking much more enjoyable.
