10 Things You Should Never Leave on Your Kitchen Countertop If You Want a Cleaner, More Organized Home 2

The first item I removed was the collection of small appliances I rarely used. My blender, sandwich maker, and food processor had been occupying valuable space even though I only needed them occasionally. Storing them in an accessible cabinet freed up room for preparing meals. Appliances used every day can reasonably stay out, provided they fit safely and comfortably into the available space.

Next came potatoes and certain other vegetables. Potatoes are best kept in a cool, dark, well-ventilated place rather than on a sunny countertop. Light can cause greening and the development of glycoalkaloids, so green potatoes should be handled cautiously. Refrigeration isn’t generally the best choice for ordinary household potato storage either. Onions also benefit from a cool, dry, well-ventilated location, separate from potatoes when possible.

Spices were another problem. I had arranged colorful jars beside the stove because they looked attractive and were easy to reach. However, heat, light, and moisture can gradually reduce their flavor and aroma. Moving them into a dry cabinet or drawer away from the stove helped preserve their quality. I also relocated my coffee beans to an airtight container in a cool, dark cupboard, protecting them from unnecessary exposure to air, heat, and sunlight.

Paperwork and incoming mail were next. Receipts, bills, school notices, and envelopes had slowly accumulated beside the fruit bowl. Apart from making the kitchen look messy, paper clutter made it harder to clean the surfaces properly. I created a separate place for household paperwork elsewhere in the home and made a habit of sorting mail as soon as it arrived. The difference was immediate: the countertop looked cleaner, and important documents were easier to find.
