I opened the camera app and began scrolling through the overnight footage. For several minutes, nothing happened. The porch remained completely empty, illuminated by the soft light above the entrance. Then, shortly after three in the morning, the motion detector activated. A shadow appeared at the edge of the frame, moving slowly toward my front door. I leaned closer to the screen as the person approached the handle. Instead of opening the door, the figure reached out and touched it briefly before stepping backward.

My heart began pounding. The aluminum foil had not been some magical security device, but it had done exactly what I wanted: it showed me that something had disturbed the handle. The camera revealed that the visitor wasn’t trying to break in. After looking around, the person walked away toward the sidewalk. I immediately checked the recording again, hoping to identify the face, but the figure was wearing a hood and remained mostly outside the camera’s strongest view. I contacted a neighbor and learned that another house nearby had noticed someone checking gates during the same week.

That morning, I replaced the foil with proper security measures. I improved the camera angle, checked that every lock worked correctly, added brighter lighting around the entrance, and made sure my doors and windows were secure. The foil itself wasn’t a replacement for an alarm, camera, or strong lock. It was simply a cheap visual indicator that something had disturbed the handle. The experience taught me that simple observations can sometimes reveal problems before they become serious.
