The legal matter resolved over the following weeks. My father had located the deed through a records search, and I had never registered myself on any family documents as the owner, so he had convinced himself there was a title question worth pursuing. There was not. The deed was clean and my name was the only one on it. His attorney confirmed this and the matter was dropped.
Here is the part I have not told anyone. Before I flew back to base, I drove past my father’s house. Not to confront anyone. I parked at the edge of the driveway the same way I had on Christmas Eve, engine off, watching the light through the windows.
I do not know what I was looking for. The same thing I was looking for on Christmas Eve, maybe. Some signal that the window was open. Some evidence that the exclusion had been a mistake rather than a decision. The light was the same. The house was the same. Nobody came to the door.
