What it does not do is result in instant indictment for showing up at a gate. Sheriff Brannock knew the law and knew how to present it in a way that made the consequences feel immediate, which is its own kind of skill, and which I am grateful for.
Nobody was arrested that morning. The realtor left first, then my stepmother, then my brother, who did not look at me as he passed.
