The Evening A Simple Apron Taught Everyone At That Reunion Table What Fabric Can Still Become In Quiet Patient Hands3

Eddie finally lifted his eyes. He quietly apologized for what he had done fifty years earlier. I thanked him, and I meant it. Nobody laughed anymore. I wasn’t angry. Sheila left before dessert, and I never turned around to watch her go. Later, Janet, whose hearing aids had worked all evening, asked me to sit beside her. We talked until the ballroom lights came on. That night, I opened my cedar chest and pulled out the yellow-check dress I had kept for fifty years, uneven waistline and all. My mother had been right. Cruelty was never the truth about me. The next morning, I hung the dress behind my office door, where I could see it every day. It reminded me that something others once called worthless could become warm, strong, useful—and completely my own.
