The entire room fell silent. Sheila’s smile disappeared slowly. I untied the apron, folded it neatly, and placed it over a chair. Then I signed the agreement. The dessert Sheila had tried to cancel, the fine linens, and the additional servers were all covered by my company, exactly as I had arranged months earlier.;

 

 

Sheila stared at me and whispered that she had never known. “That is exactly the problem,” I replied calmly. “You didn’t know, and you didn’t ask.” I told everyone about the yellow-check dress my mother and I had sewn over four weekends beneath one dim light. Then I pointed out that even the napkins in front of them had come from my company.
