The person at the door was an elderly woman named Alma Estrada, a former parish clerk who said she had known my mother before I was born. The other child was named Charlotte, born fourteen months before me. My mother had been only nineteen, unmarried, and trapped by a strict family who threatened to disown her unless she gave the baby away. A priest arranged the adoption, and Charlotte was sent to another state. But my mother never truly let her go. She kept photographs, records, and letters that were returned unopened. She carried the secret and guilt for decades. Now Charlotte was fifty-three, living in New Mexico with two grown children. Six months earlier, she had requested her birth records, and Alma had finally decided it was time to tell us both the truth.
