Daniel toasted beginnings and called his past “dead weight.” Arthur Bell approached him. “Do you know your ex-wife owns fourteen companies?” he asked. Daniel’s smile vanished. Arthur explained that one company owned the hotel, while others controlled Daniel’s office lease and bridge loan keeping his firm alive. Vanessa’s hand slipped from his arm. The room understood that the woman they thought had lost everything controlled the world around him.
Miriam sent Daniel the documents. They showed company money paying for Vanessa’s jewelry, travel, apartment, and wedding expenses. His messages called me too stupid to notice, while Vanessa wrote that once I was gone, everything would be theirs. Daniel had signed our divorce settlement declaring he had disclosed every liability. He had not. Investors began receiving notices, and Daniel stared at evidence that could no longer disappear.
Arthur took the microphone and announced a session concerning misconduct. Vanessa accused me of jealousy, but my message appeared on the screens. I told Daniel I had offered him every chance to leave with dignity, but he chose cruelty and fraud. I introduced myself as Claire Vale, chairwoman of Vale Meridian Holdings, and explained that my companies owned the hotel and were reviewing his contracts. His board had evidence. Daniel’s confidence collapsed. Vanessa threw her ring at him and ran.
The next morning, Daniel was removed as CEO pending investigation. Within a month, investors sued. Three months later, he pleaded guilty to financial misconduct. Vanessa settled after her messages became evidence. Six months later, I stood on my balcony overlooking the harbor. Fourteen companies had become sixteen, my name was on the door, and life was quiet. Miriam asked whether I felt better. I thought about the courthouse and the woman who once believed Daniel defined her worth. “No,” I said. “I feel free.”
