After my father died, my husband Nolan told me the house I inherited was controlled by a trust administrator. Then I found the trust papers in our box: pages fourteen and fifteen, with everything before them missing. I called my father’s attorney, Elaine Mercer. Her answer changed everything. “You are the successor trustee and sole beneficiary.” I had never received statements because Nolan had convinced Elaine I wanted no contact.
Elaine showed me the trust records. My father had left $186,420 for repairs and taxes, and the house was paid off. Yet Nolan charged me $900 monthly as “rent.” The payments went to Hearthstone Residential Management, a company Nolan created after our honeymoon. He called it a household expense. Before I left, Elaine showed me a document: a deed of trust against my father’s house. The property had secured a debt. I knew Nolan’s secret was larger than the rent.
