I had buried my husband only hours earlier when I unlocked our condo and found his family already inside. Eleanor, David’s mother, had brought relatives who were opening drawers, packing electronics, and claiming anything they believed belonged to the family. She insisted the condo and its contents were really theirs. I was grieving, exhausted, and completely outnumbered, but I refused to surrender my home.
Then Chloe found a blue folder in David’s office. Eleanor’s reaction was immediate. She did not look surprised. She looked frightened. Before Chloe could hand it over, my phone vibrated. The message came from David’s number, even though he was dead: Do not give Eleanor the blue folder. Call Martin Bell. My heart stopped. How could David have sent that message? And why had he prepared instructions for the exact scene unfolding in front of me right after his funeral, while everyone watched me stand alone?
