Toby pointed at the ceiling. The carved oak beams, the long arched windows, the stone fireplace behind the head table. “Three years ago this hotel was a condemned shell,” he said. “I drew the restoration. But the man who led the crew that rebuilt it, beam by beam, is the man you just called uneducated. You are sitting in a room my brother built with his hands.” Lawrence looked up at those beams as if seeing them for the first time. Then Toby said the part nobody expected. Lawrence’s firm had just signed a contract for its new headquarters, designed by Toby, with Hollis’s company already chosen to build it. Toby told him the contract would be withdrawn Monday morning.
Imogen did not raise her voice. She asked her father to leave her wedding. Vivian stood up first and walked out beside him, and I watched her glance back at me once, her eyes wet. Then Toby did something I will remember for the rest of my life. He picked up my place card, tore it in half, and carried my chair to the head table. He set it down between himself and Imogen, in the seat that had been reserved for the father of the bride. The ballroom went quiet, and then Imogen’s grandmother started clapping, and slowly everyone joined her.
