Nathan stood frozen on the sidewalk in his wedding suit, the woman from the silver car looking between us. “You followed me,” he said quietly. It wasn’t an accusation. It sounded almost like relief. I couldn’t speak. My mind was already racing through every terrible possibility, another woman, a second family, a marriage that had been a lie for ten years.
Then the woman spoke gently. “Nathan, I’ll give you a minute.” She walked toward the building, and I saw the sign above the door for the first time: a community center, and beneath it, a smaller banner I couldn’t quite read. Nathan took a breath and reached into his pocket, pulling out the note I had written that morning, the one I’d assumed he threw away with the food. “I keep every one,” he said, his voice cracking. “Ten years of them. In a box.” He looked at me with an expression I had never seen on my husband’s face…
