I did not react. Yolanda had told me not to, and I had spent eleven weeks practicing composure behind a chair, so I simply looked at my husband of twenty-eight years and said his own name back to him the way he had said mine. Then I opened the folder he set beside my notary stamp. Inside were the documents Brooke had described, word for word. A debt transfer assigning the company’s equipment loans and unpaid taxes to me. A quitclaim on the house. And, clipped to the back, a signature page where my name had already been forged in his hand, waiting only for a stamp from a notary who did not know either of us. He had brought the crime to the one woman in the county he was certain would never recognize it, and she turned out to be me.
Yolanda stepped out from behind the shampoo sinks with the phone still recording. Roy understood, in that moment, that the notary, the wife, and the witness were all the same person he had spent years describing as too unimportant to discuss.
