Thirty Years An Accountant, And Not One Person In That House Ever Asked What I Had Actually Signed

The first envelope was the mortgage. I had co-signed it four years earlier, when Damon and Priya’s credit could not carry the house alone, and Rosalind’s notice removed me as guarantor with formal thirty-day effect, which meant the lender would re-evaluate the loan against their income alone.

 

The second was the auto lease on Priya’s SUV, the one she drove to the school pickups I was no longer welcome to attend, also carried on my name and my signature. The third was the line of credit they had been quietly living on, the vacations, the renovations, the dinner parties I ate at a side table for, all of it extended because a retired accountant with a spotless record had put his name beside theirs.
