Eleven Neighbours Watching From Their Own Driveways While I Held A Coffee Cup I Had Forgotten About2

The divorce turned out to be surprisingly simple because Desmond contested nothing. He rented an apartment near the interstate and disappeared from the neighbourhood. Corinne and Ambrose separated that spring. She eventually moved to Ohio, and I haven’t seen her since. I used to imagine what I would say if our paths crossed again. Eventually, I stopped rehearsing the conversation. Some wounds don’t need a final speech to close.

Ambrose and I still talk occasionally, though never about Desmond or Corinne. In September, he built the fence along my back garden and refused to accept any money. I almost insisted, but something stopped me. He needed to do something kind that wasn’t connected to apologizing or explaining. So I let him. Sometimes accepting someone’s help is another way of allowing them to heal.

I kept the house. I sold the bedroom furniture, which felt far more satisfying than it probably should have. Without all that furniture crowding the room, afternoon sunlight now fills the space. It looks different, but more importantly, it feels different. There are no secrets sitting inside those walls anymore. No whispered excuses. No waiting for footsteps at the door and wondering whether I was about to hear another lie.

I used to think the worst part of everything was being exposed in front of the entire street. I stood on those steps at seven in the morning holding a cup of cold coffee while neighbours watched, and I thought being seen would destroy me. I was wrong. The worst part had been the two years before that—being lied to gently and thoroughly by the man sitting across from me in my own kitchen. Now I know I’d rather be seen honestly than protected by a beautiful fiction. And I will never again trade the truth for someone else’s comfort.
