She walked into the kitchen one morning and casually announced that two of her friends were moving into the house that day—completely rent free. Her son, Grayson, stood silently beside the refrigerator, avoiding eye contact. Brynn explained that the larger bedroom was the obvious choice because of its private bathroom. The narrator could simply sleep on the couch, she said, because it was comfortable anyway.
When she asked Grayson whether he agreed, he quietly called the arrangement temporary. Brynn then reminded her that family should help family. The narrator thought about two years of her pension paying their utilities while her groceries helped keep them fed. Instead of arguing, she simply said, “All right.” Brynn smiled and happily left for brunch, completely unaware that those two words meant something very different from what she imagined.
