I thought the strangest thing my tenants could do was dig a massive hole in my backyard without asking. I owned the house two streets away and rented this one to a young couple who had apparently decided they wanted a pool. When I arrived after a neighbor called me, I found an enormous excavation stretching across the yard. They insisted they had planned to handle everything themselves, but they had no permits, no survey, and no idea what might be buried underneath the property. I was furious, but before I could decide what to do, one of them noticed something unusual in the dirt.
At first, they thought it was an old piece of plumbing. It was a small metal object, half buried near the deepest part of the excavation, with a surface so dark and corroded that nobody could identify it. I climbed down into the hole, brushed away the loose soil, and realized it wasn’t plumbing at all. It was a box. A heavy, sealed metal box, hidden beneath the backyard for reasons nobody could explain. I called the police, expecting them to tell us to leave it alone. Instead, what happened next changed everything.
