For eight years after my husband passed away, I believed romance was no longer part of my life. Then I met Richard, a kind and funny man who made me feel appreciated again. We started slowly with coffee, dinners, and quiet weekends together. For the first time in years, I allowed myself to imagine happiness. My thirty-four-year-old son, Jason, was protective of me, so eventually I invited Richard to a family barbecue. I expected an ordinary afternoon filled with food, laughter, and introductions. Instead, everything changed the moment Richard saw Jason. His smile disappeared, and his expression became tense. He stared at my son as though he had seen a ghost.

 

 

Richard pulled me aside and lowered his voice. “What did Jason do to Emily?” he asked. I stared at him, completely confused. Before I could answer, Jason walked toward us. He looked at Richard, then quietly said, “Mom, there’s something you need to know. Emily is his daughter.”
