I woke before sunrise on Christmas morning and noticed something strange. The driveway was empty, the house was silent, and the suitcase I had packed for our family trip was still sitting beside the front door. I had paid for six nights at a beautiful winter lodge and believed my son Shawn, his wife Delia, and their children were taking me along for the Christmas vacation we had planned together. When I called Shawn, he sounded confused. “Mom, I thought you decided not to come,” he said. My stomach tightened. I told him I had never said that and asked why my name had been missing from the room list.
Shawn went quiet. Then he admitted he had found the list in the kitchen trash before leaving. I explained that I had booked every room, including one for myself. He suddenly lowered his voice. “Mom, Delia also told me you agreed to sell your house to her parents in the spring.” I froze. I had never discussed selling my home. According to Shawn, Delia’s parents were already making plans and even talking about contractors. Then he said something that made my hands tremble. “She told me you wanted to live somewhere smaller.” I stared at the empty driveway, realizing our Christmas trip might have been part of something much bigger.
