Detective Harris stood beside me as he addressed my parents. His calm voice immediately changed the atmosphere at the airport. He explained that questions had been raised about the circumstances surrounding Grandma Hazel being left behind during our family trip. My parents exchanged nervous glances. Their story about a harmless mistake was beginning to fall apart. My aunt looked equally uncomfortable, while my cousins watched silently, slowly realizing that something far more serious had happened. My father tried to explain, but Detective Harris stopped him. He calmly reminded everyone that Grandma’s safety and well-being were the priority. For the first time, my parents seemed to understand that their actions could have consequences.

 

 

I stepped forward and told them that leaving Grandma behind was not simply a forgotten ticket. It had been a deliberate choice, and she deserved an honest explanation. My mother looked at me with guilt, while my father struggled to maintain his confidence. Then Grandma Hazel stepped forward. She looked directly at my parents and softly asked, “Why did you leave me?”
