I had bought my eighteen-year-old son, Oliver, a $400,000 beach house so he could focus on college without worrying about rent. It had four bedrooms, a pool, and a perfect ocean view. I thought I was giving him the best possible start in adulthood. Three months later, I arrived unexpectedly and froze when my sister-in-law Lindsay opened the door. Oliver’s grandparents were sitting comfortably inside as though nothing was wrong. When I asked where my son was, they casually told me he had moved out weeks earlier. Nobody seemed worried. I immediately called Oliver. After several unanswered calls, he finally picked up. His voice sounded exhausted. When I demanded his address, he hesitated before finally giving it to me.
I found Oliver living in a tiny, run-down apartment with a hot plate, folding table, and secondhand refrigerator. He looked thinner and exhausted. I hugged him and demanded to know why he had abandoned the beautiful house I had bought for him. Oliver stared at the floor before whispering, “Mom, I found something in the house. Something you were never supposed to see.”
