**The Secret in the Glass: What My Grandfather’s Grape Juice Really Meant**

For years, I believed my childhood visits to my grandfather were nothing more than sweet rituals between a little girl and the man who adored her. Every Sunday afternoon, I would walk beside him through the garden, ask endless questions, and drink grape juice from a tiny glass he insisted was my “special champagne.” He always smiled when I arrived, always sat in the same chair by the window, and always asked me about school.

 

 

I thought he was simply an old man who loved routine. I never questioned why he wore the same sweater, why he repeated the same questions, or why his eyes sometimes lingered on my face longer than seemed necessary. I was too young to understand that people could be losing something invisible while still smiling.

After he died, I found an old box tucked away among his belongings. Inside were photographs, handwritten notes, and a letter addressed to me. At first, I smiled at the familiar memories. Then I read the first few lines, and the meaning of every Sunday afternoon began to change. The man I remembered as peacefully predictable had been fighting a battle I had never known existed.
