For weeks, my six-year-old son had been waking terrified in the middle of the night. He insisted there was a man outside his bedroom window, watching him from the darkness. I checked the yard repeatedly and found nothing, so I assumed it was a nightmare. My husband seemed more concerned than I was, but he never explained why.
Then I noticed something strange. My son had started collecting forks from the kitchen and hiding them under his mattress. When I asked why, he whispered that they would protect him if the nighttime man came inside. I gently told him that there was no man and took the forks away. The next morning, they were back.
My husband became increasingly quiet. He began checking doors and windows before bed, leaving certain lights on, and sometimes staying awake long after I had gone to sleep. I assumed he was stressed from work. Worse, I began resenting him for being emotionally absent when our son needed reassurance.
One night, I found my son sitting on the floor beside his bed, clutching three forks and staring at the window. He whispered, โMommy, heโs back.โ I looked outside and saw nothing.
Then I noticed something moving near the fence.
