The Mother In Law Thought The Paid Off House Was Finally Hers To Claim

For three years, I had carried more of our household financially than anyone seemed willing to acknowledge. Sebastian stayed home with our children, and I respected the work he did, but I was the one making the mortgage payments, covering the bills, and keeping our family afloat. His mother, Beatrice, never thanked me. Instead, she criticized everything I did.

 

 

She hated the house I had worked so hard to keep. The furniture was wrong. The kitchen was outdated. The garden needed changing. Every visit ended with another suggestion about how she would improve the place if it were hers. I tried to ignore her because she was Sebastian’s mother, but her comments became increasingly bold.

Then, one evening, Beatrice stood in my dining room and announced that she intended to make the house her own. I looked at Sebastian, expecting him to finally defend me. Instead, he smiled awkwardly and said nothing. That was the moment something inside me broke. The next morning, I discovered that the trust I had created years earlier contained a provision neither of them had expected. I called Sebastian and Beatrice to the kitchen table.
